Get Ready to Know, What is Mind Map?

A mind map is one of a learning strategy where students can make lines containing points or words that lead to a subject. Mind map as a strategy to help students do brainstorming. Mindmapping activities can be used by the teacher in pre-activities because students will begin to think about what words or pictures are related to the given topic. It can help learners expanding their minds, indirectly; they are trained to be able to choose the information obtained. The students usually make a mind map on a blank paper with markers, colored pencils, pens, etc.

In the technological era, we can invite students to create mind maps online. Several applications can be used such as Coggle, Popplet, and Mindmup.com. I have already used a Coggle application. The application is easy to use, for students as well as for teachers. Before creating a mindmap, some instructions are already written on the Coggle display, so we can understand what tools are we want to use.
Mind maps can be used by teachers as media in teaching reading. How it can be? A mind map is a line scheme that contains important points; the teacher can start the activity by giving a text that will be discussed in today’s lesson. For students, of course, they will start reading the text because they don't know what words to write in their mind map. The students usually do the scanning technique or speed reading technique. After completing the reading activity, students can start building their creativity by processing mind maps. It can build students' creativity by how to make their mind maps look simple, colorful, easy to understand, contain important points from text, and interesting to see.

Besides being used as a task in pre-activities, the mind map itself can be used as a students’ hand out. Because they make the mind map by themselves, of course, students will understand what they have made. It will certainly make it easier for students to understand the learning material based on what they have read and concluded.

I have already created mind map titled "The Elements of Drama" which can be used for teacher describing Drama, Movies, and Role Play activities.
